Shingles is a debilitating condition, which occurs more frequently and tends to be more severe in older people.
It is estimated that around 250,000 people are affected in England and Wales each year including 30,000 people in their 70s.
We are now offering routine shingles vaccinations (called Zostavax) to patients:
Born between 2nd September 1935 to 1st September 1937 and
Born between 2nd September 1942 to 1st September 1945
The shingles (Zostavax) can be given as a single vaccine or at the same time as the flu and pneumococcal vaccinations where relevant and we are giving the vaccine in our Flu Clinics
To book an appointment please telephone the surgery, but please remember that we are only allowed to give the shingles vaccine to patients in the relevant age groups.

Suspicious Calls

We have been made aware of an issue, originating in the Wigan Borough area but this may be happening further afield.

A company called Vivid Lifestyle are calling vulnerable patients and using persuasive sales techniques to talk them into buying unnecessary and expensive supplements and medications.  They do supply health supplements; however we would always question any medication bought without a prescription from a GP/Doctor.

A request for them to make their patients aware of this company and not to engage in conversation and certainly not provide any personal or bank details.  GPs may wish to reiterate to patients not to buy any health supplements or medication over the internet or via phone as you never know what you are receiving.

If any patients have provided such details please advise them to contact their bank(s) immediately and request that their Fraud Department put a block on the account for any future payments.  If any patients wish to take this matter further they are able to report the incident to their local Police.

I thought I should make the CCGs aware of this in case anyone else had reported it – as they are obviously using dubious methods to get vulnerable patients to give their card details.

Counter Fraud have been informed.
